Roche Diagnostics downward spiral

They used to be #1 in the US and the world in diagnostics, then their leaders left, the FDA moved in and total incompetence followed. They continue to lose good talent and have mediocre products. And again as they did two years ago, they cut their customer-facing departments, while continuing to be so top-heavy they keep falling over themselves. The most recent reduction of 200 has established Roche as probably the only $1billion organization that does not have a true customer service department, or leader. Instead of going from "good to great", they've gone from "great to desperate".

Another Diagnostics update.

Another Diagnostics update. David L moving over to Pharma, No surprise after DOD took over. So, who is in the running for David's former position?

So the next chapter in the

So the next chapter in the Branchburg to Penzburg transition for enzyme production (first reported here in September 2011) is what will it KOST? In 2011 the decision was based on tthe move saving millions$. Then Kosts ballooned. Then the German team members argued the savings were real and the ballooned estimates incorrect ; the move would save money. Now an independent KOST estimate is in the works. Roche's best 2 out of 3 decision-making speaks for itself. This observer hopes RMS moves despite the KOSTS and predicts that within 12 months of such move, the RMS PCR products will suffer from fatal quality problems. Dump your ADRs as soon as this move happens.

Roche must be in an excellent

Roche must be in an excellent shape if the most urgent topic discussed is the ban of alcoholic beer at one of their sites years ago...

oh my good what a pussy, destroying the paradies in biotech´s world

There was only 1 opening to

There was only 1 opening to the coal mine and it was sealed in concrete when Boehringer Mannheim started to build the Penzberg facility. No one ever fell into it. There is a small mine car on the property as a monument to its mining history. Boehringer Mannheim was able to purchase the property at a discount as the city of Penzberg was eager to obtain a source of jobs to replace the mine.

Don't get to excited about the availability of beer in Penzberg (or Mannheim for that matter) as it is alcohol free now. In the 1970's alcohol containing beer was available from vending machines but safety concerns eventually led to its removal. The head of safety was a Bavarian and he took a lot of heat from the Bavarians from having it removed.l

don´t forget you are talking about Bavarian, beer there is like liquid bread with additional nutirent supplements, great to know that Roche is thinking about the healty and motivated status of their staff

What's great about the

What's great about the Penzberg facility is that is is located on top of an old coal mine. It use to be pretty common to walk around the grounds and fall into an old shaft. Also cool is that they have beers in the cafe vending machines.

Great place to take the train to Octoberfest.

VelaDx COO has not been axed

VelaDx COO has not been axed - MC was tired of traveling to Singapore and refused to move. MT was also tired of being openly challenged so he was "transferred" to the US.

Well, now what? Is Illumina

Well, now what? Is Illumina off the hook? And does Roche-454 breathe a sigh of relief? What's the next shoe to fall? Does the company trim more internally or wait a few months for another stab at ILMNA? And when does DOD's picture come off the investors page and SS goes up as the company leader?.....tune in next week. Same time, same channel.

Rumor has it Vela Diagnostics COO has been AXED - MC, MT's poster boy obviously could not cut it. Goes to show MT's lack of hiring skills (among other things he fails at) or he was just desperate at the time. All these Roche rejects will come to realize how good they had it. One for the history books - COO fired well before company starts business.

The grass was kept green

The grass was kept green through the use of their own water reserve that does not pull from the city water. If you are an employee you'd know this if you paid attention. As for the PCR, this has been addressed earlier. A fraction of a percent of a companys revenue does not impact it as a whole. RAS could go to $0 revenue and it would barely impact the rest of Roche.

A few more people recently

A few more people recently tossed over-board in Branchburg. Slow but steady leak of talent out the bottom of the boat. While up on deck all the chairs are being re-arranged....moving people around just because it makes management look like its doing something. Anything. The passangers should know by now it's all a distraction until the new course is announced. If Nutley can't anchor Roche in NJ why should one think Branchburg (or nearby Branford) can. The cruise will be over shortly and all the passengers can disembark.

Totally agree with the last

Totally agree with the last poster. The "trust me" factor of qPCR and untold probablities for errors and multiplicative efficiencies of 4 to 6 different steps have shit canned this tech in diagnostics. Moreover, there is not 1 consistent machine or algorythem used to quantiate - all companies have different ways to calculate. There is no governing body to standardize either.

Go back to research and your average results. When you can put your BIG BOY pants on a give us cell to cell variablity and cell to cell quantitation instead of averages, then show up at the door - until then stop wasting our time.

"To be blunt, it's painfully

"To be blunt, it's painfully obvious you do not know what in the hell you are talking about. When extraction efficiency, PCR efficiency, and assay design process are optimized, specificity and sensitivity for a given target can well meet diagnostic needs."

Back at you...extraction efficiency (x) pcr efficeincy - which can be more than 100% - explain that (x) assay desing optimized (ie. no consistant process) x ...(x) = between 70 to 80% probablity of success for an average number of copies/cell - which the cells can NEVER be used again because they have been destoryed...

Now that's an asaay that I can trust!

"Sure, the results show a

"Sure, the results show a general trend over a large population of cells, but doesn't have the clinical specificity needed. qPCR has run it's course, time for a different technology."

To be blunt, it's painfully obvious you do not know what in the hell you are talking about. When extraction efficiency, PCR efficiency, and assay design process are optimized, specificity and sensitivity for a given target can well meet diagnostic needs.

Given that, what is the different technology that you are talking about?

Which is?

Roche Diagnostics is where it

Roche Diagnostics is where it is today, not because of the people they have hired, but because qPCR is not what the world wants in diagnostics. Sure, the results show a general trend over a large population of cells, but doesn't have the clinical specificity needed. qPCR has run it's course, time for a different technology.

Be nice to us and maybe look out for some jobs for us, you probably heard we are having redundancies because of you, maybe buy us a coffee in the name of mercy, remember one day it could be you (but with our prospects? I doubt it)

It seems like Jack Phillips

It seems like Jack Phillips is stabizing, and helping Roche to rebound after the MT path of destruction. Interesting to note that Roche lost the $19.5 lawsuit with Marsh. That decision to pull out was another MT decision.

All that said, glad to see Roche has a leader that can maybe help it grow again.

Lets see...if this site attracts losers than it works I mean it really works!!!!! lucky we fired you when we did!!Whew!!that was a close one - we thought we hired a smart farm country boy then we realized that you didn't have the education you said you had - I guess you knew someone that had analog internet and a fancy shiney computer that helped you fill out the on-line application and pulled some strings to get you hired. I'll say hello to your wife and kids that work at Mcdonalds (I'll put in a good word to have your wife bumped up to "pickle girl".) Typical comment from a hard working blue clollar who is upset he only makes 7.26 an hour. you didn't make the cut either in the military either. they did a botch job on that scar on your neck....darn. lol

As pointed out. The total

As pointed out. The total lack of diag market understanding on this board is amazing. Especially when it's from Life Tech reps. Clueless as always.

You are an idiot. Does immuno

You are an idiot. Does immuno chemistry mean anything to you ? What about POC or Pharma? That's Roches main biz, applied science is spit in ocean. Of course, Life folks live in a cave, so they know dick squat (was there for ten years) Do you know how little Life knows about companion drugs compared to Roche ? Roche has fucking clin trials on drugs associated with screens. Just look at their massive Athena research for HPV screening. You are so in the dark Lifers. Keep working with that ding dong bow tie doctor. Mr useless.

"I just came back from IND

"I just came back from IND headquarters. Not a single LIFE staffer there and Life has zero diag understanding. In fact, it will be Life's demise."

WRONG !!

Life just hired R. andrews and he brought in his Right hand Man..These guys are Diagnostics Legends...I am guessing they will start plucking reps from their previous employer.

Just wait until they get their hans around this mess..

I give it about 18 months and then WATCH OUT!!

You all can't be serious.

You all can't be serious. Life? Sequencing? Roche is going to fail because you think that 1% of their business is supposedly at the whims of LIFE? Nothing but sales reps and researchers seem to be commenting here, because the lack of understanding of Roche's profile is perplexing.

So true, LIFE has all the

So true, LIFE has all the controls over Roche. Roche is a pawn that LIFE moves whereever and whenever it wants. In fact, it was Roche who is scared that LIFE may start pushing them out of diagnsotics, and buddy buddied with them recently on pcr licensing terms.

Roche has lost to Qiagen for DxS Scorpions and now will lose to LIFE. Count Roche as an also ran - look at the no nads bidding for Illumina. Roche is defeated, start counting more dead.

"I just came back from IND

"I just came back from IND headquarters. Not a single LIFE staffer there and Life has zero diag understanding. In fact, it will be Life's demise."

Dude, everyone knows that Roche is at the mercy of LIFE and the second generation Livak patents. Without LIFE, Roche is toast. the kit patent needs a licensed probe...does Roche have one of those - NADA.

We own you Roche - on your kness and pray to GL and LIFE.

Hear tell that big changes

Hear tell that big changes are on the horizon in CD! JC has seen enough and there will be MAJOR changes at both the VP and the AD levels. Such a suprise! I guess that's what happens when you put a bunch of brown-nosers in those positions that know nothing about the business and even less about leadership and management.

WTF are you on ? I just came

WTF are you on ? I just came back from IND headquarters. Not a single LIFE staffer there and Life has zero diag understanding. In fact, it will be Life's demise.

That is rubbish that MT is

That is rubbish that MT is financing Vela Diagnostics by himself or his family (he must have posted that himself). Vela has investors (M ... AG) that are now ready to pull the plug as MT has failed to produce products. He is trying to source cheap products from India and China to put together his whole business which everything is OEM anyway. He failed to create anything other than buying things, slapping a Vela sticker on it and trying to con customers into buying it when they are better off buying it from the original manufacturer directly.
