Roche Diagnostics downward spiral

They used to be #1 in the US and the world in diagnostics, then their leaders left, the FDA moved in and total incompetence followed. They continue to lose good talent and have mediocre products. And again as they did two years ago, they cut their customer-facing departments, while continuing to be so top-heavy they keep falling over themselves. The most recent reduction of 200 has established Roche as probably the only $1billion organization that does not have a true customer service department, or leader. Instead of going from "good to great", they've gone from "great to desperate".

Any update on FDA response?

Any update on FDA response?

Strips have been submitted to

Strips have been submitted to the FDA that do not have Maltose interference. In all aspects they fulfilled the FDA's expectations, the FDA responded by telling them to work on a few things. Roche sat down with the FDA to make it explicitly clear what needed to be done. Roche resubmitted and the FDA has not responded in months.

If the FDA continues to not

If the FDA continues to not approve Diabetes strips with the Malstose interference they will force the manufacturers into a corner. This is their intention so that the manufacturers like Roche spend some additional money on fundamentally solving the Malstose problem.

It is unlikely that Roche will invest in a fix for the problem. Their Diabetes franchise has been on a negative trend for some time and the Accuchek brand is losing it's "moxy"

I think it means Roche is

I think it means Roche is Babylon.

Roche...is number 1!

Roche...is number 1!

It is not the likelihood of

It is not the likelihood of the interference but the potential death outcome that gets FDA attention. All brands have interference of some kind or another.

When Accu-Chek test strips

When Accu-Chek test strips were forumlated they had no over-the-counter interferences, unlike competitors products. When Baxter created a peritoneal dialysis solution for home kidney dialysis it created an interference for a product that already existed on the market.

The hold-up on passing strips that don't have maltose interference? No idea, you'd have to ask the FDA. People who are at risk of this interference are explicitly told not to use strips and meters that have this interference and the respective call centers should instruct customers as such.

The FDA originally made it's warning in 2005. Things don't always happen quickly, but when the risk of someone getting an elevated test result, over medicating and subsequently dieing seems like a good thing not to rush into production.

And how many years has the

And how many years has the Maltose issue been going on? Class? anyone? anyone?

"It seems that new hires for Sales positions will have no idea that Ortho Clinical Diagnostics Vitros was originally Kodak Ektachem and that the ACS180 was a Ciba-Corning successful Immuno analyzer. In other words, people over 40 need not to apply."

And Vitros ECi was 'Son of Amerlite'. Bastard son (Amersham was screwed by Rochester), maybe but certainly nothing to do with Raritan.

A curved ball: Roche is co-developing a monoclonal-based cancer drug. Piggy-backing a statin to kill the individual cell.
J&J is co-developing a million-spot microchip, also monoclonal-based, as a 'non-biopsy' method (from blood sample) of determining progress of cancer during treatment.
If O-CD is involved (and with its immuno expertise it should be), maybe this is why Roche want O-CD. The chip would be a good tool for identifying a monoclonal specific to cancer type.
My guess is that J&J will not want to sell O-CD if it looks like the chip will be successful.

says it all

We can't launch any new meter

We can't launch any new meter in the US market until the FDA gives 510k approval. They are not giving approval because of maltose and sodium interferrence. If so, we would have Nano no code launched. We are gearing up, but, no FDA approvals. Only launching into the rest of the world markets not controlled by FDA.

By "overengineered crap" you

By "overengineered crap" you must mean Compactplus and Multiclix.
Waiting for a combination of the two. Will be Lifescan's 98% 'user error' revisited.

This has never stopped SS before. Why should it now.

Their consumer customer

Their consumer customer database is large-too large and out of control & they have nobody that knows how to utilize or even manage it effectively. They do not even realize that American consumers do not like and cannot use the overengineered crap from Germany. The cash cow is milked out. Divestment? Buyers anyone?

with the looming cuts in

with the looming cuts in medicare reimbursement for strips etc... (>50%) they would be crazy to fund any new products. Their new slogan is "manage the damage" meters and strips is not the business for anyone to be in right now.

So is Roche NA Diabetes Care

So is Roche NA Diabetes Care ever going to launch any new product or just continue to play damage control?

Doesn't really matter what

Doesn't really matter what you think of MT, because SS will screw you all.

Doesn"t really matter what

Doesn"t really matter what you think of MT, he will do great. He is a "winner" in the lottery of life; smart, wealthy, handsome, self confident right education, right contacts etc. Maybe he went too far too fast, but he will regroup and find a good opportunity. Life really isn't fair...

KD of response scares

KD of response scares everyone away, look how long " Michael McN" lasted after leaving Agilent...what three whole months? SHe'sa scary one

Please let me know when and

Please let me know when and where MT lands. If the company is public, it is a PERFECT opportunity to short the stock! Easy money is the way that I see it! BTW, he is not on the board of Response Genetics. He tried to get on the board with a group of activist investors and the management team convinced the shareholders that MT was not qualified to sit on the board! Check out the press releases and the proxy letter from the CEO. Maybe his "style" of leadership is better understood by the larger community.

1) MT doesn't need a

1) MT doesn't need a job....2) his agreement with Roche required he sit out for a while. He'll get a jon when he decides he really wants one

Wow, what a bunch of pathetic

Wow, what a bunch of pathetic people. Your life must be so miserable. You couldn't get a job at walmart if you left Roche so you opt to stay, collect that weekly check you so deserve and have bitch sessions on a rumor mill site. Wahoo, ain't life great!

MT is gone, why worry, why discuss the issue any longer, he is gone!!!!! You'll never work for the company his does due to your lack of knowledge. Look at yourselves, you post on boards. Do you really think you have it in you to be with another fortune 500 company. Stay in your cubicles and type on rumor mill sites since that is what's really important to you.

Try and have a happy Holiday but since you are scrooge at Roche you are most likely scrooges too in real life. Its all about me, who care about anyone else but poor little me.
I'll end again with.........what a bunch of pathetic people!!!!!

PS...i'm not at Roche so don't be so quick to judge, oh, well written like an HR person. My better half works with Roche and he is so happy to be there. I'm with another competitor.
MT is still retired as of 12/1/2010.

Good question! Where did MT

Good question! Where did MT land? I am in an employment serach and want to make sure that I don't knock on the door of this idiot. What a arrogant baffoon! I pray no one hires him so that he knows what it's like for struggling families who were victums of his reign of terror at RDC Dx.

It did hit the mark and the

It did hit the mark and the additional duties that Roche has you do are no more than any other company in the industry.
Is there any job still in existence that you are asked to do less this year than you did the previous year?
Maybe oil spills or nuclear meltdowns.....
You obviously have not interviewed recently or aren't very in touch with how many candidates the employers have to choose from.

The reality is that folks

The reality is that folks were offered X to do Y and through the years, the X side of the equations hasn't increased but on the Y side, Z, A, B, and C have been added.

Nice attempt at an analogy but it really didn't hit the mark.

You mean they can't? Many

You mean they can't?
Many people would be thrilled to work here and do whatever they ask.
Maybe it is time for you to go the way of the old Amershamers.
No one is forcing you to stay here.
It is a very straight forward agreement.
I pay you X and ask you to do Y.
If you don't like Y, don't take X and hit the road you whiner!

"They think that they can

"They think that they can take monkeys, give them a sales system and they will all be "rock-stars". Obviously they felt that none of the RBM's were capable of career advancement hence the group of new AD's. I hear that there isn't a talented, experienced, capable one in the bunch. "

Specially young and cute monkeys. That is the sales model of the Pharma industry. Hire smart, attractive, younger people, train them for 2-3 months and spread them all over the territory. Problem is the average Lab Manager is over 45 with 20 yrs of experience and the last thing they want is a kid telling them how to run their place. Lack of industry (business and technical)experience of the Sales Reps and constant turnover are two of the main complaints by Laboratories all over the country. Hope my new Roche Sales Executive can at least last two years.
