"How is morale nowadays from inside LT? Productivity took a big dive after the news leaked. Who would want to go to work put in 150% knowing they may not have jobs in a few months.?"
For me, the morale is higher than ever before. As a result of the transaction, a few smaller companies will be created, and thus more jobs. For example, I used to manage a bunch of testers in Singapore. Now, the job scope expands and I got to manage software engineers as well. It's sort of promotion to a director from senior manager.

Why would LIFE spend 18MM and god know how much to lease the SSF facilities while trying to sell the company at the same time? Better to not do anything at all.?
Because on paper you've sold the FC site and can use that revenue to bump up Q1 numbers and then the lease is for 18M, which is spread over 30 years (or whatever large number of years), which only gives minor (relative) hit for the next 120 quarters....That way when the sh1t hits the fan and everyone realizes what a horrible lease it was, you're long gone, right GL?

Here's what I don't get. Let's say you run a half-decent biotools company. You don't have Apple's P/E or cash stash, but you've got a decent P/E and pay your shareholders dividends. One of the companies that competes with you in many product lines announces very publicly that they're putting themselves up for auction. Why wouldn't you anonymously leak that you're in the bidding war. When their CEO calls, tell him you're working on that bid and it will be there soon. Yes, you'll get it before the deadline. Yes, we're really interested. I know those other guys have dropped out, but we're really in this thing. Then FedEx him a box of dog poo, an offer of 10 cents a share and watch as it turns into one of the true financial fiascos of 2013.

If thermo buys life, life will have its reputation ruined
Based on what I know, Life probably will not be sold in one piece.
The software and corresponding V&V was restructured this week in Singapore. From now on, there is no division called software V&V. All the synthetic bio staff, including testers and software developers report to me now. Employees working of PCRs or related stuff to another senior manager.

Whomever buys this company will need to work very hard to build back the trust and loyalty that our customers once had and have now lost. Quite often we deliver malfunctioning instruments, we ship half of the items we are supposed to ship or the wrong items. Is this a one time mistake? this is what they used to think but the fact is that we don't fix our mistakes (although they have been getting reported) and customers see this. So now, clearly, not only we are more expensive but we suck too, consequently the customer is going to the less expensive and somewhat reliable competitor. Simple as that.
The sad part is up there in the exec levels they know this and I don't they care! as long as the happy momentum lasts no need to fix anything and when the momentum ends...just sell and move to the next target?? I guess this is the only explanation I have to explain why we are so persistently dysfunctional.

Whomever buys it should close the distribution dept. immediately run it out of their own existing distribution center, morale is so low at Life's DS that it's only a matter of time before it drags the whole company down due to excessive errors in picking product and shipment. Has anyone seen the errors coming from International lately?

Looks messy, what would be the best scenario if you worked for LIFE.
One thing that can be taken to the bank (other than GL's payout) is that there is no "best" scenario anymore. Everything is messy, just in different ways. Nobody wants to buy and run LIFE as an intact company. The ONLY way it stays semi-intact is if this whole buyout scenario is abandoned. In which case, look for the stock to take a bigger hit than Illumina's did after the Roche bid pull out.
The article states that whoever is the buyer will probably have to buy all and divest what they don't want for tax reasons. i.e. TMO buys all of LIFE and punts Ion over to Roche or maybe the other way around. Roche keeps Ion and then sell the rest to TMO. Looks messy, what would be the best scenario if you worked for LIFE.

Life Tech isn't going to exist pretty soon so anyone with the capability should leave, happy or not. They actually announced that Ion Torrent will be walled off from other employees in the South San Francisco site (even though sharing the same site). If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know (both in terms of the sale and Life Tech in general) then you're utterly hopeless.
