I just interviewed at The Broad Institute last week.
I cannot believe how completely and utterly full of themselves they seem to be. There were a few nice people, but most of the people I talked to were incredibly arrogant.
And, looking at their resumes, a lot of them have very little reason for that arrogance. One person, a big deal in the chemical biology division (but hardly a big name) took the cake. After talking, I started to wonder what this person had done to have their head expand to fill the room. I looked them up and basically the answer seems to be work at a semi-failed biotech and then feed off the trough at The Broad Institute.
It looks like I will be getting an offer. To anyone who has worked there, am I off base here? Did I just get a bad sample set?

Hmmmmmm ... I thought the Broad Institute was the organization that regulates legal prostitution in Nevada. I must have it confused with something else.
Broad just went through
Broad just went through restructuring and laid-off 12 very good employees, including lab managers, bioinformatics folks, phd's who used to work for many years to build the center around different technologies. Unfortunately, it's not a nice place anymore and treats people without dignity, loyalty and not offering any opportunities for dedicated people with great deal of expertise.
Really though, take a look at
Really though, take a look at Forma. This "head of R+D" was a consultant at Arthur D. Little, then he set up some HPLC's and Mass Spec's at Arqule, Oh, yeah, ended up supervising a bunch of Tecan's dispensing solutions to make reams of amides. Then when ArQule canned him he had to resort to working for a discount CRO analytical shop (Wolf), and then all of a sudden he's running up R+D at a therapeutics startup!!??? What!!??? All with associations and glowing reviews from Schrieber and connections to Broad?!
Come on people, can you say pump and dump? lipstick on a pig?
The Broad Institute is not a
The Broad Institute is not a company so there isn't really a central organization or culture - each group will have different pros and cons, more like individual labs in an academic department. If you didn't like the people you interviewed with, don't take the offer and hope for the best unless you want to be job hunting again shortly.
The most capable, intelligent
The most capable, intelligent people I've met in science were down to earth, personable people, that were able to "get it" in an instant.
Broad institute is filled with people trying to profit by selling junk science to big pharma's. Take a look at their association with Forma Therapeutics. The "head of R+D" was one of the chief cons at ArQule, supposedly selling "automation of chemistry". A load of bull, I was coached to lie to clients with regards to using automation for chemistry at ArQule which had been done by hand. What a mass spec jockey like Kyranos knows about being a head of R+D at a therapeutics company is beyond anyone. What more needs to be said, the place is clearly another ridiculous pump and dump attempt. It's funny how those that speak the truth about such places are slandered and prevented from earning a living.
The arrogance of the people
The arrogance of the people at the Broad is no better or worse then at the all the large Pharmas that surround it.

I've watched really talented, really nice people get really raw deals from the Broad Institute. I can think of several cases where a fairly top-notch person has been been fired due to, apparently, the whims of the powers that be.
I work in recruitment, and I hear about a lot of the dirt that flies. I have to say that I'm not aware of any other supposed basic research institute that treats their employees this way. Sure, I see this each and every day at big pharma. But not from the acadmic-like sector.
I've helped place a few people with the Broad Institute, but mostly I try to put them elsewhere. What I tell them is this: Why bother with the Broad Institute? If you want that kind of capricious environment, you might as well take a job in industry and get paid more (and usually get an equity stake).
