Just announced (see BD's website, among others) that BD intends to acquire Accuri. More consolidation in the cytometry market. Especially interesting coming one day after the announcement of Danaher's acquisition of Beckman Coulter...

This will be a repeat of Biometric Imaging. Great story, which BD Marketing bought, but poor performance.

Accuri raised over $32

Accuri raised over $32 million in investor funds since 2005 (http://www.pehub.com/95140/baird-exits-investment-in-accuri-cytometers) and had $10 million in sales in 2009. Anybody know what BD is paying for them?

Pity poor Accuri. BD has just about the worst track record in the business for making a success of its acquisitions (mostly because it makes dumb acquisitions, and when it realizes that it shuts them down or just ignores them to death). Look at FFE Weber...what, you never heard of it? See my point? Bought it, then sat around for two years trying to figure out what it could possibly be good for, then shut it down. Look at Clontech. Bought it, sat around asking 'WTF?', then dumped it. Look at Atto Instruments..with no sales force, no field service and no product development, just being ignored to death. Look at Tripath, now Womens Health and Cancer. Just laid off its entire R&D staff, before it had developed any actual successful products. Handylab will be the next acquisition disaster. There are a couple more bite-sized acquisitions looming, too...try not to laugh when you read about them.

BDX execs are about 0 for 10 in the acquisitions department. How they keep hold of the car keys after so many head-on collisions is one of life's mysteries.
