Agilent is new in advanced staining.
More than 85% of Dako sales come from IHC – and they have no competitive stainer in the pipeline.
They will continue to loose market shares to Roche and Leica by marketing 10-15 year old laboratory equipment from LabVision/Thermo and Tecan. The processing time is forever and they cannot even do antigen retrieval onboard.
Less than 5% of Dako´s sale comes from FISH – and that is from one single product.
What did Agilent buy? A non-formamide hybridization buffer not yet launched to the market?
I doubt the shareholders will like this merger. Blood and money will be spilled.
Dako sold to Agilent Technologies

What a very sad state of affairs. Senior leadership with this company has been pathetic at best for the past few years. Conventional wisdom would expect that this organization would have been an industry leader with proper funding and just a touch of credible business acumen. The science is well above average and the employees have been yearning to follow someone/anyone that is worthy of being called a "leader". Sadly, they have been terrorized by drunken fools that believe that they are entitled to live the high life as the organization crumbles around them.
Dako is not the future.
Dako is not the future. Agilent made a hasty decision here. Not typical of the way they work. AFFY's influence must have crept in from around the corner.

Any updates? Noted Agilent's less than stellar quarterly results. Is it sinking in yet that Dako isn't going to be a shining star, for quite a while?

If they ever get a Louis Freeh led investigation, look out!
I would have to believe that
I would have to believe that this would be a good purchase for Agilent. I do, however, think that the person who settled on this price should be sent packing. I also have to think that playing catch-up will be difficult for Agilent/Dako. Roche, Leica, and Ventana have SUCH a head start. All are producing instruments, while needing some improvement, are good instruments. I have used them all. I wish them luck.....
dako will fight back for
dako will fight back for sure, they are not going to loose with out fighting. see for surprises in the coming months
How accurate is this. While
How accurate is this. While Tecan does plenty of OEMing, this would mark a new way of thinking for Dako. WIll Agilent go along with this relationship, especially since it appears to be a stop-gap, at best?
Might the re-skinned
Might the re-skinned GenePaint that Tecan is rumored to be OEMing for Dako bridge the gap? The system is a bit long in the tooth and based upon old technology
As an outsider looking in,
As an outsider looking in, let me Explain...
Dako will not have a Stainer for years...I worked for Dako, Biogenex and Ventana. Also for Aperio.
So Aperio develops this great scanner with Dako, Dako screws it up Aperio goes out and becomes the number one slide scanner in the world.
General Electric Healthcare and Phillips Two large imaging powerhouses jump on the scanner band wagon...They still four years later have basically NOTHING!! Oh, and the other companies...i.e. BioImagene had crap and sold off to Ventana who still has not really fixed it.
This is why I agree with the above poster who wrote:
Essentially that by the time a new Stainer comes out, the Competitors will be years ahead again..Oh, lets not forget the ARTISAN Staining System (ASS) disaster from Cytologix!!
You are joking right? In the
You are joking right? In the time that it would take Agilents very-capable engineers to build them a "state of the art" box (3-5 yrs), the competitors will be so far ahead they will never catch up. Don't forget the competitors will also all have new generation boxes out. Agilent is comfortable in the staid world of analytical chemistry, they don't stand a chance in the rough and tumble, unglamorous world of diagnostics.
This is the rumor mill with
This is the rumor mill with anonymous comments but com on guys... Dakos performance has in no way been impressive since their failed stainer but no matter how you turn it, it is one of the most well established reagent houses. And now being a part of one of the most succesfull instrument makers how can that not be a win win? Dako can concentrate on regeants and Agilent tech department can supply the hardware and software for a new generation of stainers. The response from NYSE was positive and it's very likely that Agilent/Dako within few years fights Leica, Ventana/Roche, and Sakura being the big three.
Dako will skyrocket now. Good
Dako will skyrocket now. Good for them and for the customers that still believe in ethical business partnerships. Dako still has MANY great employees that seriously are interested in customer welfare, so unlike the competitor employees ranting on in here...

I can only see a win.....not a win-win situation....
How will they "win" customers
How will they "win" customers continue to abandon them for Roche or Leica?
Agilent is a great company
Agilent is a great company with excellent leadership. The integration will be seamless. I expect to see revenues skyrocket as the synergies take effect. This is definitely a win-win-win.

Good for Dako (Agilent can fund the continued development of their new box, which has been so delayed), good for Dako's customers. Agilent has no IVD expertise and the guy running their Dx (ex-Genentech, Accumetrics, Chiron, dufus RS, could find his ars with both hands). Whoever OK'd the bid of 2.2 X, should be fired immediately (they could have gottent it for half that).
I think it will be good for
I think it will be good for the company. Dako was alone in the dark. The knowledge of Agilent in high tech instruments may help them develop something new. Of course there will be blood, but usually they cut who really didn't want to work and other bullshitters. Some of these bastards will remain, though. I'm positive about it but I will wait for the first 60 days to have a final opinion about the acquisition.
