The infallible Danaher Business System is driving Beckman associates away in droves. The DBS metric, retention of top performers, will soon have no top performers to measure.
Experienced associates have all been "leveled", morale is at an all-time low as Danaher shows it places no value on scientific knowledge and experience.
Danaher's core values are nothing but empty phrases. "Associates are our most valued assets." "We're passionate about retaining, developing and recruiting the best talent available."
What did Danaher actually buy - soon there will be nothing but empty facilities. The talent has left the building.

"what I don't understand is
"what I don't understand is what hidden value DHR saw in BEC to start with"
An important part DHR growth strategy is based acquisition. Few companies available are ever what one might ordinarily think of as good or healthy - they are in trouble and that's why they're for sale. DHR acquires companies adjacent to their existing businesses, have good brands and where they can identify significant room for operational improvement. BEC fit their life science platform, had brand recognition and certainly had plenty of room for operational improvement.
They may have swallowed a rotten fish, but as a strategic buyer of companies they looked to make money by building their conglomerate portfolio. There seems to have been significant collateral damage and hard feelings in the process, but nothing like what would have happened had BEC been acquired by an institutional investor (ex. Bain). Better hope it does not come to that.
Also Danaher's name was
Also Danaher's name was unknown to diagnostics customers. Not like the Roche, Siemens, Abbott, Johnson of this world.
They only had one chance to make a good first impression. Beckman reputation was destroyed. Danaher had a hence to bring it back from the start. They failed miserably. Now customers often tell the remaining sells rep to leaves BCI.
Trust is broken
"The offending business(es)
"The offending business(es) and all accountable are in jeopardy should countermeasures not succeed on the specified timeline."
Your comments are a fair and relevant analysis. With regard to BEC what I don't understand is what hidden value DHR saw in BEC to start with. The DX market has been tough for awhile and BEC has been a marginal player in that bad space for some time. Surely DHR understood the concept of catching a falling knife.
Cost cutting will only get you a short term bump. Bec went through their "austerity" program in 2004 after the robotic debacle of October 2003 conference call. BEC had layoffs in 2005. BEC had R4G in 2007. DHR cleaned house in 2011. Looks like 2012 will be a repeat of 2011.
Do the math, that works out to a shake out every other year. Can you define the falling knife analogy any better?
Cut Cut Slice Slice - Ouch!

Your statement is wrong. Most of the ingredients for success have left.

DHR rolls restructuring cost
DHR rolls restructuring cost into the initial price of an acquisition. The admission of need for extraordinary expenditure indicates poor judgement and/or execution. The offending business(es) and all accountable are in jeopardy should countermeasures not succeed on the specified timeline. Things may now get even more "interesting".
Did DHR actually say where
Did DHR actually say where that 100 million restructuring would go to?
Did DHR actually report anything negative about the BEC acquisition (not to be confused with the ongoing DHR inquisition)?
Danaher doesn't need 100
Danaher doesn't need 100 million to fix bci.they need 100 years to clean the mafia inside bci

That is a beautiful excuse to tell the shareholders. What we bought is a lemon
"The company said on Thursday
"The company said on Thursday that it would spend $100 million this year to restructure"
-Not good news but a $100 mil is not even a drop in the bucket for DHR. $50 million of that was planed in 2011 for 2012. I think DRH is just looking for a way to continue to scare its employees to accept the soon to be new normal. Fear works.
"DHR has the money to hide the BEC mistake indefinitely so don't ever expect that they will own up to their error."
-Its playing out now.
To the person who pasted to Twilight Zone clip link - you nailed it.
More layoffs at Beckman: NEW
More layoffs at Beckman:
NEW YORK, July 19 (Reuters) - Industrial and medical conglomerate Danaher Corp reported lower quarterly earnings, cut its full-year forecast and said it would speed up cost-cutting to protect profit margins in a worsening economic environment.
The company said on Thursday that it would spend $100 million this year to restructure operations and reduce expenses, double its earlier plans. It also warned that a stronger dollar would trim profits

"You can die from someone
"You can die from someone else's misery—emotional states are as infectious as diseases."
Dead on.
DHR knows this as well. Unless you want to lose your job remember this and put on a happy face. DHR will manage you out the door if they think you are reflecting less than the expected level of happiness. I saw a twilight zone the other day which applies perfectly - 'It’s A Good Life'. Its the one were everybody has to keep a little kid happy.

The problem is that SG let go anyone who had a 'Vision' of where the company needed to go for long term health/growth. It's like Apple when SJ left. The. Ones are there but they need someone who has a good vision of where to take the diag biz. Life science alone wo t do it. SA is a goof.

You can die from someone else's misery—emotional states are as infectious as diseases. You may feel you are helping the drowning man but you are only precipitating your own disaster. The bottle washers are trying their best to design new instruments, but the DBS stat program keeps telling them to do the same thing over and over again. They keep coming up with the same ol' instruments and problems.

The problem is that they are not scientifically smart. Few executives with hard skills. All timelines, money, and micromanagement, yet no understanding of the science (ironically resulting in longer timelines and no money).
The Pointy-Haired-Bosses refuse to hear reality conveyed by the technical folks in the next layer down (the laws of chemistry cannot be changed to meet "vision").
The entire BEC acquisition
The entire BEC acquisition was mishandled from day one. Someone at DHR must really be kicking themselves in ass over going along with the whole thing. DHR could have done much better spending their cash on a company which lent it self to the DHR DBS. DHR has the money to hide the BEC mistake indefinitely so don't ever expect that they will own up to their error. That money will be used "re-buy" what they thought they were buying in the first place. I don't feel very good about the next four years.
The forecast calls for pain my friends!

I agree TB is a big a??
I agree TB is a big a?? kissing manager. She is worthless as a LS manager. She does not take care of her employees. Big liar. She has put managers in place who are disliked by many employees. She has her favorites who haven't not made budget in years, but continue to stay employed. Just moved around every few years and say they need a few years to understand the territory. It is a joke to work here with favoritism like that. Go ahead TB and put a few more of your unworthy colleagues into management positions. I guess a mail order MBA from Columbia, SC can make you a good manager!!! Keep up the a?? kissing. Life has a funny way of paybacks.
