Interesting that a thread about disparity between CEO pay and worker pay turns into a couple people fighting about worker pay in industry vs worker pay in academia. I've been in both settings, and both have merits, and drawbacks. Right now I'm in industry, and there is plenty of potential for layoffs/pay freezes due to declining profits/bad decisions. My friends in academia doing NIH-funded research are also facing layoffs/pay freezes due to the sequester/bad decisions.

Lots of insanely smart folks in academia doing basic science and applied research and publishing it to share results with the world. Lots of smart folks in industry reading those articles and then doing additional research, and working to commercialize/manufacture etc. Without industry, there wouldn't be a need for government to invest in basic science. Without academia, industry would not grow nearly as fast.

I'm sure both sides will disagree with this post. But what is sad (and funny) to me is how insecure economic times turn two worker ants against each other, arguing over who has gathered more crumbs that fell off of the CEO (or University President) table.

Well, I spent 25 years working in pharmaceuticals and have probably forgotten more than you've ever known. Unlike most Pfizer "Scientists" though I was actually good enough to make the transition from pharmaceuticals to academia instead of the other way around, so I've made my money. Now they pay me to do real work. I have a grant coming through this spring, so I'll get my raise then. Meanwhile, the University provides me with generous benefits, including 10% of my salary to a TIA-CREF retirement fund that I don't have to contribute a dime to, unlike your wonderful Pfizer 401K match, so take that smart ass.
