I think there is more than hype here, every genome center that I have visited wants a box as soon as they are released. If successful, that means many will buy more than one.
And profit is not a four letter word, so anyone making money after dealing with risk for so long deserves the reward.

I'm sure they will come out with a product. I'm not sure if it will be any better than Helicos. Their single molecule sequencer has been out for a couple years and ha sold a miniscule number. HLCS stock is at about a buck.
PacBio has done an excellent job of hype. Should be good for the founders to cash in when it goes public and they will probably be the only ones who make money (as usual).

The question is not "are they gonna compete?". It's can they? Has anyone out there actually run their systems, or at least submitted their own samples to compare against other systems? I don't doubt they have something, I just don't know exactly what it is. They have changed their story a couple of times over the last few years.
