I could look up similar data for the approval given to President Bush for the war on terror which I know would also support my contention. (The war against Iraq was a different situation, but, again power was granted with a minimum of objection and squabbling).

There was never anything like the kind of squabbling that exists today. Almost everything today, even the simplist legislation, falls victim to the pettiness of ideological purity on both sides to the point where the last Congress was one of the least productive in the history of the United States. The House passed very few bills, in particular, although the Republicans did find the time to waste the public's money by holding at least 33 different votes to repeal Obamacare while knowing full well that it had no chance of even coming up for a vote in the Senate, let alone being signed by the President. This is not political advocacy; it is pure obstructionism and incompetance. As much as the Republicans hated Roosevelt and as much as Democrats felt that George Bush had stolen the election along with his brother Jeb, it was never as bad as it has been since 2008. Not even close.

Why don't you jerks give it up already. The housing crisis had so many 'villians' it is impossible to assign blame to one individual or one party. Both parties had a hand in the crisis, but for different reasons. Democrats favored easily lending standards to make housing available to lower income families and thus allowing them to more readily achieve the 'American dream'. Republicans favored the exact same thing because it meant huge profits for the banking industry. Each party made a deal with the devil (the other party). Both parties got sucked into what was basically a Ponzi scheme and both were more than willing to let quasi-government agencies to take loans off of the banks' books so they could just make more loans. Both sides knew the ratio of loans to holdings was totally excessive, but shut their eyes because each was getting some of what they wanted for their 'constituencies'. Yes, a few stood up and warned us about the train wreck, but no one seriously attempted to stop the runaway train.

To try to blame it all on Clinton, or Barney Frank, or George W. Bush alone is absurd. The trend goes back at least as far as the Carter administration, and probably has its roots in the civil rights legislation from the 60's. It was a great party. Everyone was invited; everyone came to sip the champagne. Those who want to claim the crisis was due to only one side are simply not credible and are not worthy of engaging in a mature, rational discussion.

If we are to ever fix the problems in this country, the 'blame the other guy for everything' mentality has to stop. Can you imagine what would have happened had this kind of blame-game squabbling occurred after Dec. 7, 1941 or Sept. 11, 2001? Now is the time to stop the finger pointing and shed the pre-conceived notions and get together and roll up our sleeves and work together to find solutions. It is time for the politicians to care more about finding common ground rather than playing to their bases for the next election. Actually working together and fixing things is a much more reliable way to get re-elected than to say, 'we did nothing at all, but we stood up for our principles'.

The time has come for each American to make a basic decision. Do you want to cooperate with your fellow citizens to make things better, or keep squabbling like a bunch of children until everything we hold dear goes down in flames? The choice is simple, folks .... principles or practicality?

Actually, whether you like the military or not, the military is a major part of the American economy. It isn't just the soldiers, sailors, etc. It is all of the contractors who design and manufacture weapons, it is all of the towns that exist near military bases that depend on military personnel to spend money in their towns, etc. One of the biggest failings of the liberals (and some conservative libertarians) who believe that the United States would do just as well with a much smaller military is that they have never come up with a plan for what to do with all of the people who's jobs depend on the military. Where would they be employed?

A similar situation exists for those who wish to see major tax reform. One of the Republican candidates for President last time around suggested that taxes could be simplified to the point where the standard tax form would be the size of a post card. Basically, the tax code would become: how much did you make?; this is your tax due. Simple, and potentially far more equitable than our current maze of tax laws. But the consequence of such simplification would result in thousands of accountants losing their jobs. So even here, the question becomes, what do you do with all of those people.

These are fairly simple issues of practicality and just two easy to understand examples of why simple solutions to problems often have complicated side effects that must be dealt with. A good plan, be it a business plan, a plan for a family vacation, or a plan for the government must consider all consequences and have appropriate contingencies built in so that the 'medicine' doesn't become worse than the 'disease'.

Something serious for all sides to think about the next time they propose solutions to our problems.
